Discussing commutes on public transportation between the State of Mexico and Mexico City goes beyond simply measuring distance and time. To describe this daily odyssey, it is necessary to identify circumstances that inevitably affect it: the inadequate operation of public transportation, the lack of accessibility or lighting in transit areas, poor security, and complicated routes. In 2022, Line 1 of the metro was partially closed for renovations. Although the work was initially scheduled to take eight months, it remains unfinished in 2025. This has resulted in improvised access to alternative transportation, a considerable increase in travel time, and other situations that contribute to the unequal mobility experience of thousands of people, primarily women.
